Get ready for a very cold run through the woods of Cuyahoga Valley National Park at this race, which is likely to be run when there’s plenty of snow on the ground here in this 32,000-acre park just outside Cleveland in northern Ohio, which is perhaps most famous for its towpath trails and its deep forests and rolling farmlands and hills.

You’ll start the race just off the highway that runs through the center of the park, at the Ledges Trail shelter just off Truxell Road. From there, the course will follow a pair of out-and-back loops that run both north and south of the highway, and finish back at the Ledges shelter.

Deep snow and ice are possible. They’re part of some 125 miles of trails that wind through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and feature a range of surfaces — while a few stretches are paved, most are dirt or gravel surface trails, some with clay and mud (and rocks and tree roots) that can be especially slippery/tricky to navigate this time of year.

Once you head out onto the trails, you’ll be surrounded by trees and woods in all directions, as you make your way first north toward the the Happy Days Lodge and around the Boston Run Trail, which will make up about the first 4 miles of the race.

The course brings you back where you started and then keeps heading south, bringing runners along the Salt Run and Pine Grove trails. These stretches head west, going deeper into the sections of the park just off Truxell Road.

A counter-clockwise loop around the Salt Run Trail is followed by a clockwise loop around the Pine Grove Trail, and then you’re heading into the home stretch, back to the Ledges Shelter for the race finish.

Get ready to get dirty. This race “is a great event if you want to have fun and get dirty with like minded runners regardless of the weather,” organizers note, adding that it’s “definitely NOT the event to select if one is looking to go fast.”

The course for the race will close at 4:15 p.m., which means it will be open for 8 hours and 45 minutes.
