Organized by the North Carolina-based Hope For The Warriors, a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides support to wounded U.S. veterans and their families as well as the families of fallen American soldiers, Jacksonville’s Run For The Warriors Half Marathon is part of a series of running events that take place across the country from May through November.

Featuring a 5K and one-mile run/walk in addition to its half marathon distance, the race takes runners on an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the track and field facility of Jacksonville High School.

From there, runners head out on a 13.1-mile route that winds through this medium-sized coastal city whose history dates back all the way to the early 1700s, but which also has the distinction of being the youngest city in the U.S., as its population has an average age of 22.8 years old.

Why is the average age here so young? That’s because Jacksonville lies just a stone’s throw from two nearby U.S. Marine Corps bases — Marine Corps Air Station New River and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, a helicopter base and amphibious assault training base, respectively.

The city lies along what is known as the North Carolina “Inner Banks” region, which provides ample space in Morgan Bay, which flows into Camp Lejeune, for training of this kind.

After leaving the high school stadium, runners head out onto a course that takes them mostly through Jacksonville’s residential neighborhoods just north of its downtown area.

Tree-lined streets and neighborhood homes will be your scenery throughout most of the half marathon, though there will be a bridge crossing near the end of the race, as runners will make their way over a tributary from the New River, which flows through the city.

The race is open to runners as well as walkers and both civilian and military entrants, and the half marathon is first to run at 8:05 AM, followed by the 5K race. There will also be categories for wheelchair and hand cycle competitors, and award categories in 14 age groups.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the North Carolina coastline, just over an hour’s drive northeast from Wilmington and about 120 miles southeast of Raleigh, Jacksonville typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in November.

On race day (Nov. 14), the average low is 42ºF and the average high is 68ºF.
