Note: While this race is happening in 2018, there is no half marathon distance planned. The below information refers to the 2017 half marathon.

An annual late winter race that’s held as part of the Maui Whale Festival in February each year, the Run For The Whales Half Marathon takes runners and walkers from the Maui Ocean Center in Ma’alaea on Maui’s southern coast on a route that runs from there to Kanepolepo Beach Park and back.

Open to both runners and walkers, the half marathon and 5K are run as a benefit for marine and ocean education programs for Maui’s schools, and the event also includes a Keiki FunRun race for both runners and walkers.

More than 470 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined in 2016, as the race expanded to include a half marathon, 10K and 5k race, and this year’s race also features a 2.5-mile walk for children ages 12 and under.

The race is a fundraiser for the Pacific Whale Foundation, which supports research on humpback whales in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific, as well as education for school chidren on marine life and conservation programs for whales around the world, including efforts to prevent whale collisions with ships.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along Maui’s southwestern coast, about 11 miles from the island’s Kahului Airport, Kihei typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather conditions year-round, and usually low rainfall except in the early and mid-winter months.

In January, temperatures average between °F and 81°F, while rainfall amounts average around 2.5 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Feb. 4), the average low is 63°F and the average high is 81°F.
