The challenging hills and wooded trails of the Morgan-Monroe State Forest are the setting for the annual springtime Run With The Foxes Trail Half Marathon, part of a weekend series of races that also includes 10 mile, 13K and 5K trail races.

Located just a few miles from the nearby town of Martinsville, the out-and-back race starts and finishes at the Cherry Lake shelter in the forest, and follows a winding loop course filled with switchbacks and steep inclines and declines along the forest’s many hills and mountain ridges.

Hailed by many of its past participants as one of the country’s most naturally beautiful trail races, the race usually draws up to 300 runners each year, making it a smaller, more intimate race that gives you the space to take in the natural beauty that surrounds the course as you make your way over the trails. The course is also reportedly well-marked and includes five aid stations located throughout the race.

The race is also a fundraising event, one of three races staged by the Hoosier Hikers Council to raise money to restore and rebuild area parks and trails, to ultimately improve the opportunities for hiking in Indiana.

The group also stages the Knobstone Trail Mini Marathon and the Tecumseh Marathon, and is currently focusing its efforts on completing the 140-mile Knobstone Trail.

Race Weather & Climate

Set in the hilly, forested areas of the Morgan-Monroe State Forest about 35 miles southwest of Indianapolis, Martinsville sees generally mild to moderately warm weather in the early spring, but also its wettest weather of the year in May, when rainfall totals average just over 5 inches for the month.

On race day (May 18), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 73ºF.
