Saturday, September 8, 2018 • Smithfield, VA • Course Map
Part of a series of running events that take place across the mid-Atlantic and the Southeast each year that also serve as fundraisers for the Safe House Project, a nonprofit that helps to create refuges — “safe houses” — for the victims of sex trafficking, the Safe House Project Hampton Roads Half Marathon makes its inaugural running this year as summer is turning to fall.
Runners will follow an out-and-back course for the race, which starts and finishes along South Church Street in Smithfield, a town in the South Hampton Roads area of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, just across the water from Newport News.
The town itself lies along a bend in the Pagan River, and you’ll follow alongside the river for portions of the race, which has only minimal changes in elevation — the course ranges from a low of just over 4 feet above sea level to just shy of 50 feet at its highest point.
The race opens with a stretch down South Church Street before turning into Windsor Castle Park, a 158-acre park whose history dates back to the mid-1700s, when it was originally a plantation.
You’ll run through the park for the first 3-4 miles of the race, and then out into the town of Smithfield, before heading out for a long out-and-back along North Church Street.
Once you hit the turnaround at River Oaks Lane, then you retrace your steps along the route you’ve just run, all the way back to South Church Street for the race finish.
