runsignup blueSet for its 51st annual running through the city known as the “Gateway to the West,” the St. Louis Track Club’s annual Saint Louis Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back route that takes place almost entirely inside Forest Park, whose nearly 1,300 acres are just one of the St. Louis’s more than 100 urban parks scattered throughout the city.

Estimated at nearly 500 acres larger than New York City’s Central Park, Forest Park has a long, rich history here in the city, as it served as the site for the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, and first opened to the public all the way back in 1876.

Filled with trees, lakes, ponds and wide-open meadows, the park serves as the race route for nearly 11 miles of the course, as runners complete the first nine miles and the final mile within the borders of the park.

The race route starts and finishes near the center of Forest Park at the Municipal Opera Theatre — or the Muny, as it’s known to locals — an amphitheatre that seats 11,000 people and has produced summer theatre for the past century.

From there, the race weaves its way through Forest Park for the first nine miles, leaving few sections of the park untouched as the course makes its way southwest toward the St. Louis Zoo (which runners can visit after the race) and Kennedy Forest.

After leaving Kennedy Forest, runners are treated to some of the city’s most scenic urban views as they make their way along the winding Lagoon Drive and Lindell Boulevard on the northern border of the Park, passing by notable landmarks like the St. Louis Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum.

The route brings runners to the mid-way point of the race near the center of the park along Union Drive and Wells Drive, after which runners weave their way out of the eastern side of the park and make a small lap around the streets surrounding Clayton Avenue before returning to the park.

After that, it’s a brief jog to the finish line back at the Muny. The race is open to both runners and walkers, and the event also hosts a 5K Run/Walk as well as a half-mile run for kids that loops around the Center of Clayton parking lot areas.

More than 1,000 runners crossed the finish line at the race’s 2014 running in both events combined, including just over 930 runners in the half marathon.
