Best known as the home of the world-famous Unclaimed Baggage center, which sells items left unclaimed in airports from around the world, Scottsboro plays host on Labor Day to the Scottsboro Half Marathon, which joins a series of running and triathlon races that take place here in this city of just over 14,000 in northeast Alabama.

Runners are set to follow an out-and-back course for the race that will start and finish in Goose Pond Colony Park, home to a golf course and lakeside neighborhoods here along the shores of Lake Guntersville, part of the Tennessee River.

From there, they’ll head north along Ed Hembree Drive past the golf course and within sight of the water for the first mile, and then head east and north into the neighborhoods along the lake.

The race, which follows a largely flat, forgiving route with only gently rolling hills, features a pair of out-and-back loop stretches around the middle and second half of the race.

After the second loop around Peninsula Drive, the route heads back toward Island Drive and Goosepond Drive for the home stretch, which heads back along Ed Hembree Drive to the finish line back in Goose Pond Park.

Scheduled starting time for the race is 6:45 AM, and age group awards will be presented to the top 3 finishers in each age division, from runners age 13 and under all the way to age 70 and above.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along Lake Guntersville in northeast Alabama, about 40 miles east of Huntsville and roughly 60 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tenn., Scottsboro typically sees September temperatures that average between 59°F and 84°F, while rainfall totals average just over 4.8 inches.

On the day of the race (Sept. 3), the average low is 62°F and the average high is 78°F.
