Organized by the San Francisco-based athletic apparel, running shoes and gear company by the same name, the See Jane Run Half Marathon & 5K is a race designed exclusively for women runners, along a course that runs through Alameda’s Bay Trail and features views of the bay and the city skyline throughout most of the race.
Each year, the race attracts more than 2,500 runners and walkers to the streets of Alameda for both the half marathon and the 5K race combined. The race is organized as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Fund, a national nonprofit that works to eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer.
The starting line for both races lies at Alameda’s Washington Park, on 8th Street between Central Avenue and Portola Avenue.
From there, the fast and flat course — which is mostly an out-and-back route but has a finish line just a stone’s throw away from the starting line, on the other side of the park — takes runners in a southeasterly direction, running along 8th Street and Westline Drive toward Carlsbad State Beach, which unfolds along a long, flat straightaway section along Shoreline Drive and Bayview Drive.
The course then turns at Towata Park onto the Bay Farm Island Bridge, which runners cross and then head onto Bay Farm Island, running in a clockwise direction around the edges of the island, first along the shore toward Dolittle Pond and then along the eastern boundary of the Chuck Corica Municipal Golf Complex.
Running along Harbor Bay Parkway, runners follow the road around the southern end of the residential districts that lie near Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, and then head north again along the parkway and the shoreline around the western end of the island.
Once runners make their way around Bay Farm Island’s northern end, they run along the shoreline toward the bridge, where they meet up with the route they ran in the race’s first half and retrace their steps back toward Washington Park.
Because it’s run largely along the shores through Alameda’s shoreline parks and roads, the race course is mostly flat and breezy, and runners need to be prepared with warmer clothing, as local temperatures can get cold this time of year.
Past runners add that while the race is well-organized and supported, there aren’t large numbers of spectators along the course, so it has the feel of a smaller-size running event, even though it’s in a larger metropolitan area.
