Set for its 7th annual running this year, Seattle’s See Jane Run Women’s Half Marathon & 5K is the second of three “See Jane Run”-themed races that take place across the Western U.S. throughout the year, and are run here in Seattle when conditions are usually driest in this famously rainy city.

Organized by the California-based athletic store chain of the same name as a benefit for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the race — which features as its tagline, “I run for chocolate and champagne”! — gives girls, women, sisters, daughters and mothers an opportunity to train for and run in their first half-marathon while also raising money to fight disease.

For its Seattle half marathon (as well as its 5K and one-mile kids’ fun run), the See Jane Run race is set to follow an out-and-back course that will start and finish just north of Seattle’s downtown, on the grounds of Gas Works Park, overlooking the waters of Lake Union.

From there, the course takes runners along a combination of roads and the running, walking and biking trails that surround Lake Union, including a pair of bridge crossings — across the Fremont Avenue Bridge early in the race, and the University Bridge in the second half.

A former coal gasification plant that was converted into a public park in the 1970s, Gas Works Park today still contains old ruins of the former Seattle Gas & Light Company buildings and factories that once occupied this small peninsula that juts out into the lake, which prompted the Seattle Times website to observe, “Gas Works Park is easily the strangest park in Seattle, and may rank among the strangest in the world.”

If for nothing else, the race is certainly memorable for its runners’ swag that organizers hand out to all participants — including a champagne glass filled with chocolate wedges, as well as a chocolate tastings with complimentary champagne at the race expo.

Race Weather & Climate

Well-known as a city that sees plenty of its share of rain and clouds in the cooler weather months, Seattle typically sees mild to moderately warm weather even in July, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 47 degrees (in 1979) and as high as 96 degrees (in 1991).

On race day (July 9), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 74ºF.
