Fans of Ichabod Crane, the Headless Horsemen and the rest of the cast of characters in the famed Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” will no doubt be intrigued by the chance to run in New York’s Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon, which features stretches along the Hudson River shoreline as well as through the quaint residential neighborhoods of this historic village.

The USATF-certified course for the race begins on Beeker Avenue in Sleepy Hollow, and from there follows a sweeping loop that first heads north through town and then along the trail inside Douglas Park, which lies just to the east of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

From there, runners follow an out-and-back course that takes them first southwest toward the Hudson River shoreline, and around the grounds of the old GM manufacturing plant and through Kingsland Point County Park, where they’ll run past the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse.

Runners continue along the shoreline into the village, running through Kingsland Park toward Palmer Avenue and Devries Avenue, which they’ll follow for roughly a block before turning left and heading north on Bellwood Avenue.

The next stretch of the race takes them north through Philipse Manor and Sleepy Hollow Manor, past Peabody Field and Freemont Pond on the way to the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, where they’ll run a long out-and-back stretch through the park along Phelps Way.

Once they’ve finished the stretch through Rockefeller Park, the last few miles of the race bring runners back into Sleepy Hollow and then south past landmarks like the village’s Old Dutch Church — a memento of this area’s long-ago history as a Dutch settlement — and then back to the Village parking lot for the race finish on Pocantico Street.

The course time limit for the race is 3 1/2 hours, and the scheduled starting time for the race is 9:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate
