Framed all around by the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains off in the distance, San Dimas’s Bonelli Park plays host to the first-ever Spooktacular Los Angeles Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Run/Walk along a loop course that circles the Puddingstone Reservoir lake inside the park.
Runners are set to start the race along the southern edge of the 250-acre lake — where you can see people swimming, sailing, fishing and wind surfing on any given weekend — just off the entrance to the park on Via Verde.
From there, the course first makes a clockwise loop along a combination or park roads and biking and walking trails, passing by Brackett Field airport along the way, until runners get nearly to the starting line.
Once they make it to the turnaround on Via Verde near the lakeshore, runners then retrace their steps in a counter-clockwise loop back around the lake, following exactly the same path they’ve just run in reverse.
The terrain features a combination of paved park roads and walking, running and biking trails near the lakeshore. Organizers say runners can expect plentiful tree-top canopies along the course, and they’ll pass over a low creek bed during the race.
After the race, there will be a finish line festival at West Picnic Valley inside the park, where there will be a costume contest with prizes after the event. All race finishers will receive a “sugar skull” medal, with technical race t-shirts for the half marathon finishers.

Located in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley just east of Los Angeles, San Dimas typically sees October temperatures that average between 53°F and 80°F, while rainfall totals average just over half an inch for the month, making October one of its driest months of the year.
On the day of the race (Oct. 16), the average low is 54°F and the average high is 81°F.
