Runners will get to see the scenery of Beaverton’s Greenway Park a number of times — quite literally — as they’ll make a repeat loop through the park for both the full and half marathons at the Stars & Stripes Marathon and Half Marathon, a race that’s limited to 100 runners, to minimize the event’s impact on the park.

Located about a 10-minute drive west of Portland, Beaverton plays host to the race, a city that got its name from the large number of beaver dams in the area. Settlers in the 19th century sought out land in this area due to its fertile nature.

The town is now home to over 90,000 people who are able to enjoy over 100 parks encompassing over 1,000 acres, as well as 30 miles of hiking trails and 25 miles of biking paths.

During the race, runners will get to tour a stretch of those trails that wind through Greenway Park. The Stars and Stripes Half Marathon can be run alone or in conjunction with the Cook Park Half Marathon. Called the Firecracker Double, runners who choose to enter both races can save on their entry fees.

The races are intended to be fun runs and are not chip timed. Runners are cautioned that the race course is open and should utilize proper etiquette when encountering others on the trail.

For the Stars & Stripes races, those running the half marathon will begin their race on Creekside Place next to the Fanno Farmhouse, which was designed and built by Augustus Fanno in 1859 and today is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The nearby Fanno Creek, by which runners will pass by out on the course, is also named for him.

Runners will make 5 loops on the Fanno Creek trail, the paved trail that winds through Greenway Park and features a few rolling hills with minimal grades. The course contains 3 loops which help to break up the monotony of the race.

There are only two portions of the path that will be covered a total of 10 times. As runners make their way around each loop, they are to check in with the volunteers to ensure their lap is counted.

The aid station is located at the start/finish line and racers can enjoy water, Gatorade, and a few snacks. All finishers will receive a finisher’s medal and awards will be given to the top male and female.
