Set for its 9th annual running here along the winding trails and park roads of Stony Creek Metro Park in southeastern Michigan near Shelby Township, this race offers a scenic course that’s a combination of a road race and a trail run, with sections of the course taking runners over the Shelby Township Bike-Hike Trail.
Runners start the half marathon inside the 4,400-acre park along the section of the lakeshore known as Eastwood Beach, which lies along the eastern side of Stony Creek Lake, which sits in the middle of the park.
From there, runners will make a clockwise loop around the park and make their way past several of the places that make this such a popular spot for golfers, hikers, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers, as the route winds past the park’s golf course (and disc golf course) as well as through sections of its mountain biking and hiking trails.
The route unfolds all the way around the lake, taking runners over a combination of paved roads, dirt trails, wooden boardwalks and a stretch near the end of the race that takes runners over the North Dam in the northeast corner of the lake.
Once they make their way around the dam, runners then hit the home stretch which brings them back in to Eastwood Beach for the race finish.
The race starting time is 7:30 AM, and while the half marathon is open to runners only, the 10K and the 5K race are open to both runners and walkers.
Race Weather & Climate
Located just a short drive from the shores of Anchor Bay in southeastern Michigan, roughly 25 miles north of Detroit, Shelby Township typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in May, which also brings the township’s fourth-wettest month of the year.
On race day (May 19), the average low is 51ºF and the average high is 72ºF.
