Saturday, June 10, 2017 • Milwaukee, WI • Course Map

Timed to coincide with Milwaukee’s annual Summerfest Music Festival — which has drawn acts like the Jayhawks, the Flaming Lips and Maroon 5 to Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj in past years — the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon & 5K makes its 7th annual running this year.

The race takes runners over a course that unfolds almost entirely along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, along a point-to-point route that starts at Young Street and Erie Street, and later finishes near Milwaukee’s Marcus Amphitheater and Lakeshore State Park.

From there, runners first head south along Harbor Drive and then turn onto the Lake Freeway, which will take them across the Milwaukee River by way of the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge, named for the city’s former mayor and once used (before it was fully completed) for filming a scene in The Blues Brothers.

After runners cross over the bridge and follow the Lake Freeway three miles south, they’ll hit the turnaround point at the mile 3 marker and then head north back along Lake Freeway and back over the bridge toward Lakeshore Park.

The second half of the 13.1-mile route unfolds next along Lincoln Memorial Drive, a big, four-lane highway separated by a grassy median with plentiful trees that hugs the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Runners will follow Lincoln Memorial Drive as it curves along right past a series of parks along the lake, including Veterans Park, McKinley Park and Lake Park, where the route reaches its northernmost point at about the mile 9 marker.

Right after they pass the mile 9 point, runners then turn into the grounds of Lake Park and head along the park roads and trails, including portions of the Oakleaf Trail.

The last few miles of the race bring the field southwest past Bradford Beach and through North Point and Back Bay Parks along North Terrace Avenue and East Lafayette Place, before turning runners back across Lincoln Memorial Drive for the last mile and a half, which concludes the race with the trails that wind through Veterans Park and past the Milwaukee Art Museum, for the finish line back at the site of Summerfest.

In order to finish the race by the 12 noon closing time — race organizers will be allowed to have runners on the Doan Bridge and Lincoln Memorial Drive only for a limited period — runners will need to maintain a pace of 15 minutes per mile or faster.
