Part of a weekend-long festival that shares the same name, the SummitFest Half Marathon is set to take runners on a double out-and-back loop course that winds through portions of the lake country of southeastern Wisconsin, for a race that organizers say is “one of the fastest and flattest courses” anywhere in the state.
Proceeds from the race go to support the Watertown Humane Society, which is based in the town of the same name just a short drive to the northwest of Oconomowoc.
The race takes runners through the Village of Summit, a planned community along the shoreline of Golden Lake and Lower Genessee Lake, which lies just south of downtown Oconomowoc, a popular summertime recreation destination for Wisconsinites across the state thanks to its fishing, golf and the 47-mile-long Glacial Drumlin Trail, a running, biking and walking trail that stretches from Cottage Grove to Waukesha.
From the starting line at Genesee Lake Road Park, runners follow an out-and-back route that passes by plentiful rural farm fields and the shorelines of both Golden and Laura Lakes. Long stretches of the race course are tree-lined so they have plenty of shade, and the course also is designed to feature long straightaway stretches with ample line-of-sight to see the runners ahead of (and behind) you.
Runners make their way nearly three miles along Genessee Lake Road and then turn left to head south on Golden Lake Park Road, passing by the scenic shoreline of Laura Lake in the process. Once they make their way south for nearly three miles, the race turns right onto the Glacial Drumlin Trail, offering up a complete change of scenery.
After the race, runners can enjoy beer and food from a number of local vendors as well as performances from local bands at the SummitFest festival, as well as a home run derby, a girls softball tournament, hay rides and more.
