Sunday, February 19, 2017 • Surprise, AZ • Course Map

The Sun Health Arizona Marathon features a full marathon, half marathon, relay and a fun run that takes runners, walkers and joggers through the area known as the West Valley, past several of the city’s most popular sporting venues, important cultural and historical sites and tourist attractions.

The race’s 13.1-mile half marathon follows a point-to-point course that’s part of the full marathon, and features mostly moderate, rolling hills with only a few significant uphill and downhill stretches, though nothing that’s overly challenging for most runners and walkers.

More than 1,500 runners crossed the finish line in the full marathon and half marathon combined in recent years — including more than 1,000 in the half marathon alone — as well as 60 or more teams (2 to 4 people each) in the full marathon relay.

For runners in the half marathon, the race will start in Surprise, along West Sweetwater Avenue next to Marley Park Elementary School. From there, the course begins a long, gradual downhill descent over the next several miles, as the course makes turns on Peoria Avenue, Mirage Road, West Olive Road, 103rd Avenue, Northern Avenue, 99th Avenue and West Maryland Avenue, before turning left into the Westgate Entertainment District.

There, runners will make a left onto North 95th Street and then a right onto West Coyotes Boulevard, where they’ll cross the finish line in front of the Jobing.com Arena, the home of the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes and just across the street from the University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Race Weather & Climate

A suburban community of the Phoenix-Tempe metropolitan area that’s located just a 20-minute drive west of the downtown Phoenix area, Glendale tends to experience weather conditions much like those of its larger neighboring cities, with very hot summers and mild to cool winters, and little rainfall throughout the year.

In February, temperatures average between 43°F and 71°F, while rainfall totals average just under an inch for the month. On the day of the race (Feb. 19), the average low is 43°F and the average high is 71°F.
