Organized and run to benefit the Swan Lake Christian Camp, a nonprofit that holds summer and winter camps for children ages 4 through high-school seniors, the Swan Lake Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K Run takes participants on a tour of the lake and nearby campgrounds of this rural town just outside Sioux Falls.
Fast and flat with little change in elevation throughout the race, the half marathon begins and ends at the gateway to the camp, where runners are invited to ring the bell at the finish line as they complete their race.
Designed to be family-friendly, the race also includes a wide range of activities for the spouses, children, families and friends of those participating while they run, including frisbee golf, swimming, canoeing and worship services.
The course terrain for both full and half-marathon runners is a mixture of gravel surfaces and paved roads, and runners will also need to be ready for an early start — to avoid the warmest temperatures of the day, the half-marathon race begins at 6:00 AM.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, roughly 40 miles southwest of Sioux Falls, Viborg typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in June (the town’s wettest month of the year), which has seen record temperatures here as low as 33 degrees (in 1935) and as high as 108 degrees (in 1931).
On race day (June 10), the average low is 57ºF and the average high is 80ºF.
