Run by Trail Roots Races, the Texas Switchback Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K is set to run on the trails of Flat Creek Crossing on June 4th, 2016. Trail Roots was created to support the community of runners in Austin, providing support, coaching and group training runs. This year’s beneficiary is Back on my Feet Austin, an organization that combats homelessness through the power of running and community support.
With two trail runs a year, including the Pioneer Trail 5K race in Mid-October, Trail Roots gives new and old runners the chance to compete off the beaten path. This year’s half marathon challenging course involves two laps around the ranch, between Dripping Springs and Johnson City to the eastern border of Pedernales State Park. Runners looking to stay a while, can enjoy the 500 acre Flat Creek Crossing Ranch, perfect for nature exploration, biking, hiking and various other events. Home to an award winning 13+ mile trail system, the ranch holds multiple trail and bike races a year, as well as corporate and family retreats.Â
Starting time of the marathon is 7:00AM followed by the half marathon at 7:30AM and the 10K at 8:00AM. Runners will start next to the pavilion building and head past the main lodge before turning south and running towards Country Road 201. Runners will make their way around various buildings including Pedernales Hall, Cypress Hall and the Corral. With various switchbacks and 1400ft of elevation loss/gain, the course will surely test your trail running ability. Aid stations are located every 2-3 miles along the course as you wind your way towards the Flat Creek River. From miles 10-11, runners can look to their left and enjoys views of the river, as they make their way back towards the start/finish line for the completion of their first lap.
Runners must run through the start/finish after completing each lap, with two in total for the half marathon. Participants can expect a single track most of the time with a few sections of double track throughout the course. After your race, Trail Roots volunteers encourage runners to stick around the ranch with friends and family, to enjoy food, free drinks, yards games, swimming in Flat Creek and live music.
