Set for its annual springtime running here along the east bank of the Missouri River that winds through the central Plains, Council Bluffs’ The Gambler Half Marathon & 5K is definitely an event that has the right name — its starting and finish lines were inspired by the old starting line at the Harrah’s Casino on the riverfront.
Runners also follow an out-and-back course, starting at the Mid-America Center on Arena Way. From there, the race uses of a combination of downtown city streets and portions of the city’s running trails system, several of which have just opened up for recreational use in the past few years.
Paved and mostly flat throughout thanks to Iowa’s terrain, the trails criss-cross through the city and link up many of its parks and riverfront areas.
The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 8:00 AM and age group awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group. Just over 430 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined in 2014, including 285 finishers in the half marathon alone.
