Saturday, November 10, 2018 • Midland, MI • Course Map

runsignup-blueWith a course that takes runners through a combination of wooded forests, open parklands and over trestle bridges that once ferried railroad cars throughout this section of central Michigan, the Mid-Land Half Marathon, 10K and 5K offers a late autumn run along the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, a 30-mile stretch of paved pathways along the former rail corridor between the cities of Midland and Clare.

Open to both runners and walkers for the 10K and 5K — and runners only for the half marathon — the race features an out-and-back course that starts and finishes near the trail head in Midland, at the area known as the “Tridge,” a three-way bridge that sits near the confluence of the Tittabawassee and Chippewa rivers, also near where Wyman Street and Ashman Street meet.

From there, the course follows a very simple route — northward and westward along the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, out from Midland toward nearby Sanford and Jerome Township. Once runners reach the half-way turnaround point, they then head back and retrace their steps along the route they’ve just run, all the way back to the finish line near the Tridge back in Midland.

Along the way, runners get to take in all the scenery the rail trail has to offer, including stretches through local parks like St. Charles Park, Emerson Park and River Bend Park, and a stretch that takes runners past the campus of Northwood University, a private university devoted to business education here in central Michigan.

The course terrain is paved throughout, and the course will feel flat mostly, though there is a gradual incline between the start and the half-way point (and a gradual decline over the course of the second half of the race, back in to the finish line).

More than 380 runners crossed the finish line at the race’s 2014 running in all three races combined — including more than 200 finishers in the half marathon.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just a short drive west from the shoreline of Lake Huron here in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, roughly 130 miles northwest of Detroit, Midland typically sees cool to often quite cold weather in the mid-fall, as November temperatures average between 33°F and 46°F.

On race day (Nov. 10), the average low is 35ºF and the average high is 50ºF.
