Sunday, October 4, 2015 • Kettle Moraine State Forest, WI • Course Map

One of a series of multi-race trail and endurance events staged by The North Face throughout the year — including races in New York State, San Francisco, Washington DC and Seattle — the Madison, Wis.-based North Face Endurance Challenge through the hills and trails of the Kettle Moraine State Forest just south of the town of Dousman, about 50 miles from the nearby state capital city.

Considered by organizers as one of the race series’ events with more forgiving trails and pathways, the race is run on mostly single-track trails, with both flat stretches as well as climbs of 200 feet or more in spots.
The out-and-back loop course for the race starts and finishes at Ottawa Lake in the north-central part of the park, and takes runners on a circuitous loop through the park’s northern fields, hills and trails. Because the race course loops out and returns from a central point near County Road ZZ within the park, runners will have a chance to visit the Scuppernong aid station at this point three times during the half-marathon. The events also includes several other races that take runners through different sections of the park, including a 50-mile run, a 50K race, and 10K and 5K races.

With more than 30,000 acres of woodlands, grasslands, lakes and hills, Kettle Moraine offers runners a picturesque setting for the race that owes its beauty to the glacial formations that shaped the region many millenia ago. Runners and spectators who are interested in learning more can check out the forest’s Henry S. Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center, which highlights the animals, plant life and climatic conditions that were common in this region during the prehistoric era.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the state’s southeastern corner, just over 50 miles southeast of Madison and roughly 38 miles southwest of downtown Milwaukee, the southern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest typically sees September temperatures that average between 50°F and 72°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.7 inches for the month.

On race day (Oct. 4), the average low is 43ºF and the average high is 66ºF.
