Overview

Nestled in the High Sierra’s alpine grandeur, Troy’s 2025 Thunder Mountain Challenge offers an intense trail-running test. Hosted on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the scenic Kit Carson Lodge in Eldorado National Forest, CA, this event features a half marathon and full marathon set at 7,000+ ft elevation.

Runners begin at the lodge and embark on a counter‑clockwise Thunder Mountain Loop (half marathon), while full marathoners traverse the loop twice. The course winds through remote woodland and ridge lines, with significant climbs and descents—but more importantly, stunning Sierra vistas accompany every mile. Aid support is strong, with two fully stocked stations at Horse Canyon Trail Head and Thunder Mountain Trail Head, plus the Start/Finish at Kit Carson Lodge.

The early 8 AM start, with cut-offs at 4.5 hours (half) and 9 hours (full), provides a crisp alpine morning kickoff. With unpredictable mountain conditions—sun, wind, rain, snow, even lightning—trail readiness is key. Temperatures vary from mid-50s to 90 °F, making layering essential.

Organized by Troy’s California Trail Runs, known for immersive, rugged trail events like the Kirkwood Challenge, this race is built for experienced trail runners seeking altitude, technical terrain, and breathtaking Sierra beauty. All participants receive a finisher medal, and racers can pre-purchase technical shirts during registration. Discounted entries are available for military and first responders.
