Organized by the Northwest Florida Track Club, an athletic association for running and fitness enthusiasts in the Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Niceville areas, the Timberlake Half Marathon & 5K offers an out-and-back run through the expansive wooded areas of Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base.

The race runs along a course that combines flat stretches with a long, gradual uphill on the way out and a long, gradual downhill on the way back to the finish line.

Run on paved roads through the air force base, the route features an overall climb in elevation of about 164 feet to the half-way point turnaround, and an equivalent drop on the way back.

More than 200 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at its 2014 running, with 125 finishers in the half marathon and 88 in the 5K race.

Runners start the race near the intersection of Ranger Camp Road and Lewis Turner Boulevard, and then head out on the course heading north on paved roads through the base. Past participants report that the race has an informal and friendly atmosphere, with both volunteers and fellow runners cheering all participants on.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s Gulf Coast, near the Gulf Islands National Seashore and about an hour’s drive east from Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather conditions in the mid-fall, with ample rainfall year-round (but generally lower precipitation in the mid- to late-fall than in the summer and early fall).
