Saturday, June 3, 2023 • Saratoga, CA • Course Map

Known for its lushly wooded hills filled with redwood and tan bark oak trees here in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Sanborn County Park plays host in the early summer to the annual Trail Quake Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, part of Brazen Racing’s series of running events that take place throughout the year in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The race is set to take runners along the San Andreas Trail that winds through the park, whose more than 3,600 acres lie just a short drive west from Saratoga and feature more than 15 miles of trails for both beginner and experienced hikers, all of which offer a challenge for runners in the 13.1-mile race event in June (really all three race distances).

Organizers add that due to the steep uphill and downhill stretches, runners should expect to combine both running and walking along these trails — expect plenty of walking on both uphill and downhill sections, they say, in order to conserve your energy to run the flatter sections of the trails.

The trail will be marked with both colored ribbons as well as mile markers at every mile along the course, and runners in both the half marathon and the 10K will find that the race route takes them all the way to the peak elevation in Sanborn Park, where they’ll be able to look out onto the Santa Cruz Mountains in all directions.

The terrain features a combination of dirt fire roads and single-track trails, as well as some very brief stretches of paved roads.

More than 400 runners cross the finish line in all three races combined each year, including 150 or more finishers in the half marathon alone.

Organizers note that runners will need to bring along some cash with them to the race, as there is a parking fee for Sanborn County Park.
