After an inaugural running in 2010 with the 5K and one-mile fun run distances, the Treasured Haven Farm Veggie Run added the half marathon distance for the first time in 2011, along a course that takes runners along wooded trails and through the wide-open grasslands of this working farm in eastern Minnesota that opens its doors every year for running events in the spring, summer and fall.

All races in the event follow out-and-back courses that start and finish on the grounds of Treasured Haven Farm, on Government Road just to the northeast of Rush City, a small city that’s home to just over 3,000 residents and lies just to the west of the Chengwatana State Forest along the Saint Croix River, and about an hour’s drive north from Minneapolis.

The trail surface will vary throughout the race, organizers at the farm note, which means that runners should expect any and all of these type surfaces throughout the half marathon route: dirt roads; mowed paths through grassy farm fields; and forest trails that may contain natural debris, rocks, tree roots and sticks.

There are also some challenging hills through the woods — expect a “cross country” style course, organizers say. Runners should plan on bringing water bottles with them out on the course, to ensure they stay adequately hydrated during the race.

The 2010 race saw a course that had been deluged with days of heavy rain leading up to the race, organizers add, so runners should come prepared to run through some mud, depending on what the weather is like immediately before race day.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just west of the banks of the Saint Croix River that divides Minnesota and Wisconsin, and about 60 miles north of Minneapolis, Rush City typically sees some of its warmest and wettest weather of the year in August, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 32°F (in 1970) and as high as 100°F (in 2006).

On race day (Aug. 8), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 79ºF.
