Runners will get to quite literally make a “double cross” over the Delaware River that separates New Jersey and Pennsylvania here in New Jersey’s capital city at the 4th annual Trenton Half Marathon, 10K, 5K & Kids Run, which will take runners back and forth between Trenton and Morrisville, Pa., along a mostly flat (and occasionally hilly) course that combines stretches through the city with loops through several city parks.

The race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in the parking lot of Trenton’s Waterfront Park, the home field of the Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team, the AA affiliate of the New York Yankees.

From there, the course takes runners around Laylor and Center Streets before heading north into downtown, and the stretch that brings the field into the city’s capitol district toward the Battle Monument, which commemorates the Americans’ victory at the first battle of Trenton on Dec. 26, 1776.

The long stretch north along Broad Street turns at the Battle Monument to head south on Warren Street, which begins the stretch that takes runners south toward Bridge Street and their first bridge crossing over the Delaware.

Students of American Revolutionary-era history will find this part of the race especially interesting, as they’ll tread the ground in the footsteps of General George Washington and the Continental Army, which crossed over into Trenton across the Delaware on that snowy Christmas night in 1776.

Runners will spend just over a mile on the Pennsylvania side of the river, turning right from Bridge Street onto Pennsylvania Avenue and then again onto Trenton Avenue before crossing back over the river and into New Jersey once again, passing by Stacy Park as they rejoin State Street.

The next stretch heads toward Cadwalader Park (named for John Cadwalader, one of Washington’s generals who commanded Pennsylvania troops during the Revolutionary War), whose 100 acres runners will make roughly a one-mile loop through before heading back onto Bellevue Avenue.

The next stretch of the race, the final third of the half marathon, brings runners back into downtown Trenton and back toward the Capitol district.

There’s a stretch through downtown over Assunpink Creek that leads to the government buildings along the river (and the Trent House Museum) before runners head back south along Center Street and back to Mercer County Waterfront Park for the race finish.

The finish line will be one to remember, organizers note, as runners will enter the park where the Trenton Thunder play and run around the edges of the diamond before they cross home plate to finish the race.
