The rolling rural countryside of central New York state’s Mohawk Valley serves as the setting for the Turning Stone Races Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, which make their 5th annual running along an out-and-back course that starts and finishes on the grounds of the Turning Stone Resort & Casino.

Runners start the race near the entrance to the casino and resort, which was first developed by the Oneida Nation Native American tribe in the early 1990s and today is like a Las Vegas-style resort, with golf and tennis courts, live music and entertainment venues and more.

The course then takes runners out into the Mohawk Valley countryside, past rolling farmland in what is a roughly figure-eight shaped race route.

After heading out of the resort parking lot and onto Patrick Road, runners make just a brief run along Patrick before turning left onto Snyder Road, which they follow until it meets up with Beacon Light Road (also County Road 43A) to become Sarenski Road.

The next few miles feature a mix of rural country roads and stretches that take runners into the small city of Sherrill (with a population of just over 3,000 residents), along Seneca Street and then out again by turning onto Skenandoah Drive.

Though runners have been making a long, gradual downhill over the miles that lead into Sherrill, the course then turns and becomes a very gradual downhill over the last few miles that lead out of Sherrill and back toward the Turning Stone Resort. Once you make it to Patrick Road, that means you’re on the home stretch of the race, as the resort is within sight and the finish line lies not far ahead.

Both the half marathon and the 10K are run on Sunday, while the 5K will be run on Saturday evening starting at 5:00 PM.

Though there are uphill and downhill stretches described above, the race organizers emphasize that overall, the course is still relatively flat and fast, and the changes in elevation are gradual ones.
