Set for its 12th annual running in the late spring in the Wasatch Mountains that look out onto Salt Lake City and the valley below, the Vigor Big Cottonwood Canyon Half Marathon takes runners on a gradual, east-to-west downhill descent all the way down along Big Cottonwood Canyon Road into the town of Cottonwood Heights, where runners will finish the race near the town’s historic Old Mill Park.

The race — whose course is almost identical to the Big Cottonwood Canyon Half Marathon, which takes place a couple of weekends later in September — starts at Utah’s Solitude Mountain Resort, where the starting elevation for the race lies at about 7,700 feet above sea level.

From there, runners will turn left and head onto Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, which will take them west for the next 11 1/2 miles toward Salt Lake City, into the town of Cottonwood Heights.

Once runners make it out of the canyon and into town — dropping nearly 2,700 feet in elevation on the way down — the course then heads briefly onto Fort Union Boulevard before turning right onto the road that leads through Old Mill Park, where the ruins of Cottonwood Heights’s Old Mill still, which was first built back in 1880 from stone left over during the construction of the Salt Lake Temple.

After the stretch through the park, runners will keep heading north all the way to the finish line at the Old Mill One Building. Runners will have 3 hours to complete the race, and the scheduled starting time is 6:00 AM.
