Runners get the chance to run the peaceful, tranquil hills and mountain valleys of the middle Tennessee region just off Interstate 24 between Nashville and Chattanooga at the Viola Valley Half Marathon, which is set for its 12th annual running along the roads just outside this tiny town of less than 200 residents.

The race takes runners through a section of Tennessee known as the Cumberland Plateau, which rises throughout portions of eastern and central Tennessee along the Cumberland River.

Nearby lies the green, tree-covered hills and mountains of the Savage Gulf State Natural Area and the South Cumberland Recreation Area, both popular parkland areas that runners will be able to see off in the distance throughout much of the race.

The course for the race follows a clockwise, out-and-back loop that starts and finishes on the square in Viola, along Lynn Street, and then takes runners out south from town along Viola Road. The race route then loops around Ragsdale Road, Pleasant Knoll Road and Marcrom Road before heading back into town, where runners will cross the finish line along Lynn Street back where they started.

Organizers plan to start runners off with a scheduled starting time of 7:00 AM Central Time, and following the race, there will be a “Breakfast and Bluegrass” festival in town, which runners and their friends, families and spectators are welcome to attend. Registration is limited to the first 650 entrants, organizers note.

Registration for the race is limited to the first 650 entrants, and runners will have a course time limit of 4 hours to complete the race.
