Runners will get to experience both dramatic scenery and the chance to run through the hills and rain forests above the town of Volcano here on the big island of Hawaii at the fourth annual running of Hawaii’s Volcano Arts Center Rain Forest Runs Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Run/Walk.

The race is organized and sponsored by the Volcano Arts Center, a Kilauea-based nonprofit organization that preserves and promotes the unique cultural and artistic heritage of the Hawaiian islands and their people.

The course for the half marathon follows trails through the rain forests above the village of Volcano that lies near the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, will feature an elevation change of roughly 650 feet, which will no doubt be a challenge for many runners.

All three races in the event will start in Volcano, which lies at an elevation of about 4,000 feet above sea level, and the 13.1-mile race will take runners through both the rain forest areas near the village as well as the ranch lands at higher elevations around the town.

The race will feature plenty of stunning scenery, including views of nearby Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, as well as the volcano known as Kilauea, which is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and draws tourists year-round to watch its active lava flows.

All three races in the event are open to runners and walkers, and all three also will share the same starting area, on Wright Road in Volcano Village.
