The Wade Mountain Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K is the only one of its kind; the only trail marathon and half marathon in North Alabama, and was inaugurated in 2016 making 2023 its eighth year in operation. As the first and only trail marathon and half marathon in North Alabama, runners can expect scenic, yet rugged and challenging terrain throughout the rarely seen trail within Wade Mountain Nature Preserve, comprising rocks and roots, snakes and stinger bees, bumps and bruises, and depending on the weather, some “what have I gotten myself into” run thoughts.
It’s the type of runner that thrives under these conditions and welcomes the challenge, however, that tends to have the most fun, and thus, the most success! If you’re lucky enough to be welcomed with sunshine and blue skies (average lows are 51°F and highs up to 71°F), however, you can expect brilliant fall foliage, sun rays peering through emphatic hardwoods, and beautiful birds-ah-chirping.

Starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp, the Wade Mountain Half Marathon kicks off at 10130 Spragins Hollow Road NW and immediately launches you into the rarely-seen trail and terrain of Wade Mountain Nature Preserve. Totalling almost 1700 feet of elevation, runners will quickly experience the first major climb after mile two (2) at a section known as the Wade Mountain Greenway Climb #1. Once atop the first major climb, runners will have some relief as they plummet down Shovelton Down before making it to Wade Mountain Greenway Climb #2 just before reaching mile 4. As runners persist onward, several sections of elevation gain and loss will be enjoyed, until they ultimately reach the Piney Loop which brings them home to the finish line where they first began the journey. [Part 4] With a participant limit of only 250 runners and a cutoff time of six (6) hours for the half marathon, this race prioritizes safety and participant satisfaction; no need to worry about racing against the clock or running into crowded trails. Waitlists, however, are expected, as this popular trail race is known to sell out! This race is a “cupless race” meaning all runners must carry their own handheld water bottle, pack, or reusable cup of any kind. In case you don’t have one, the event will be selling reusable cups for only $5. After crossing the finish line, you can be sure you’ll be celebrating with a mouthful of complimentary grilled hamburgers and drinks.
