Runners get the chance to trek through the city streets of one of the Pacific Northwest’s emerging wine growing regions at the Walla Walla, Half Marathon & 10K race, which marks its 8th annual running in mid-October 2015.

The race follows an out-and-back loop course through the Walla Walla Valley in which the city lies, and which has gained recognition in recent years from several of the country’s top wine publications as an up-and-coming center for wine growing — starting off with just one winery in 1977, the city and the surrounding valley region have since added more than 100 wineries, with more than 1,500 acres of vineyards spread across its hills and agricultural fields.

From the starting and finish line in Walla Walla’s Pioneer Park, runners head out on a counter-clockwise loop route through the city, first west along Whitman Street and then a right turn to head south on Division Street.

The race route keeps making its way south along Bryant Avenue and then Howard Street, which takes runners all the way down to Prospect Road, where they’ll turn right and head west in parallel with the river valley just to the south of Prospect.

The course follows roughly an all downhill route for the first five miles as runners make their way south from the park toward the rivers, and then west along the valley as they head toward nearly the half-way point of the race along Peppers Bridge Road.

Here the course turns left twice and then begins heading east again along the southern side of the valley, and then the terrain begins rising again, climbing some 250 feet between its lowest point between miles 5 and 6 to its highest point of just over 1,000 feet above sea level, around the mile 10 marker.

Once runners make it past the mile 10 marker, they begin the northward stretch over the last three miles that take them back toward Pioneer Park, passing by Walla Walla High School along the long, often tree-lined stretch along Fern Street back toward the park.

There’s a few turns as runners make their way around the western edge of the park to head in to the finish line, just off Sasayama Drive.

While runners in the half marathon will have completed their race here, those running the full marathon will make the same loop course again to complete 26.2 miles before heading into Pioneer Park for their finish.
