The Wayfarer’s Annapolis Half Marathon race was, until 2018, one of a series of several “Zooma” women’s race events across the country — with half marathons also in Austin, Cape Cod, Wisconsin and Atlanta — where the ZOOMA Annapolis Women’s Half Marathon sees more than 2,000 runners cross the finish line each year, with just over 1,000 of those runners finishing the event’s half-marathon alone.
Both races share the same starting line, which lies just outside the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, here on the campus of the United States Naval Academy.
From there, those running the 13.1-mile race follow the course as it winds its way along a brief loop to the north of the stadium and then heads back southward along Farragut Road to Cedar Park Road, and then follows Taylor Avenue and Baltimore Boulevard across the US Naval Academy Bridge over into the town of Arnold, where the bulk of the race route unfolds.
Most of the rest of the race takes runners on a long straightaway stretch between the campuses of the Naval Academy and Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, where runners reach the turnaround and then make their way back along the roads and the tree-lined, thickly forested Baltimore-Annapolis Trail that parallels the Ritchie Highway toward the finish line in Jonas Green Park, overlooking the Severn River flowing by.
While the course features lengthy stretches of mostly gentle, flat terrain (especially for the first couple of miles through the city streets of Annapolis), runners hit their first significant hill of the race just after crossing the bridge over the Severn River, at about the mile 3 marker as they’re making their way onto the Ritchie Highway.
From there, the course follows a steady, gradual ascent between mile markers 3 and 6, followed by a brief downhill stretch between miles 7 and 8. The courses rises again around mile 9 and then follows a gradual but steady descent between mile 10 and the finish line at the park.
Race Weather & Climate
Located along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, about 30 miles east of Washington, D.C., and roughly the same distance south from Baltimore, Annapolis typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in June, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 42 degrees (in 1990) and as high as 101 degrees (in 1988).
On race day (June 2), the average low is 58ºF and the average high is 80ºF.
