Set for its 15th annual running through the streets of this small New England town that lies less than a half-hour’s drive from Boston, the Wilmington’s Half Marathon & 5K takes runners and walkers on a point-to-point loop course that’s largely flat and fast, with occasional rolling hills along roads that wind mostly through the residential neighborhoods of this suburb of Boston.
The race starts on Waltham Street, a stone’s throw from where the finish line lies — on First Avenue — and then takes runners on a clockwise loop around the town, which is home to just over 22,000 residents.
Tree-lined residential streets alternate with stretches past open parkland, including a stretch late in the race that takes runners through Wilmington’s Central Park Conservation Area.
Runners can expect the biggest hills in the early miles of the race, as they’re making their way along Glen Road between mile markers 1 and 3.
After that, the hill drops as quickly as it rose before mile 7, with more gently rolling hills for the next couple of miles and then some less steep hills as runners get closer to the finish line on Waltham Street in the last few miles of the race.
The scheduled starting time for the race is 10:00 AM, and organizers plan to host post-race festivities through the early afternoon.

Located in eastern Massachusetts, just over 16 miles northwest of Boston, Wilmington typically sees September temperatures that average between 72°F and 50°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.8 inches for the month.
