One of a series of races held throughout the late winter here in the Ogden area in northern central Utah, Huntsville’s Winter Race Circuit Half Marathon is the fourth of six races in the series that take place from early February through late April each year, which includes a 5K, a 10K, a 10-Mile and a 30K race in addition to the half marathon.

Organized and run by the owners of Striders Specialty Running store in nearby Layton, Utah, the Winter Race Circuit Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back route that starts up in the Wasatch Mountains to the east of downtown Ogden, just east of the tiny Weber County town of Huntsville, which lies on the eastern side of the Pineview Reservoir.

From the starting line at Eden park, runners follow the mostly downhill route westward toward Huntsville, and then back again.

At about the half-way point of the race, as they’re approaching the reservoir, runners make a right turn off Highway 39 and onto State Route 166. They follow this road as it turns left and then right again, hugging the edges of the reservoir as it brings runners northward and westward toward the small town of Eden, which lies on the northern end of the reservoir.

Runners follow the route through a few more turns along 166 before making a left onto Clarke Street and then one more turn before crossing the finish line.

The race usually draws a moderate-sized field, as just over 520 runners crossed the finish line at the race’s 2016 running. To board the shuttle bus that takes runners to the starting line (which begins loading at 6:45 AM, before the scheduled 8:00 AM starting time), runners are asked to park near the finish line and they’ll be shuttled to the starting line.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled high in the Wasatch Mountains just to the east of Ogden (and just over 15 miles east of downtown Ogden), Huntsville typically sees cold weather in April, a month that has brought record temperatures here as low as 9ºF (in 1982) and as high as 84ºF (in 1994).

On race day (April 1), the average low is 27ºF and the average high is 55ºF.
