Known for its architectural style reminiscent of the American Old West as well as the unspoiled natural beauty of the hills and mountains of the Okanogan National Forest and the Methow River Valley north of town, the tiny Washington town of Winthrop plays host to the 9th annual running of its marathon & half marathon this year.
Both the full marathon and the half marathon follow a point-to-point course that starts on the edge of the Pasayten Wilderness north of Winthrop — a popular wintertime recreation destination for cross-country skiing and for river rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, hunting and fishing in the warmer-weather months — and takes runners along a combination of roads through the national forest areas and rural county roads, with the race finish in town on Riverside Avenue.
Though the roads will remain open to auto traffic, there should be very little traffic at all on the course during the race, organizers note. The half marathon starting line will be at the 13.1-mile point of the full marathon course, along Forest Service Road 5160.
From there, the course follows along the winding Chewuch River along the same route as the full marathon course, down to where the Chewuch meets with the Methow in Winthrop.
On the day of the race, runners in both races will meet at the Winthrop Barn for the race check-in, and will board the shuttle bus from there to the race starting lines for each race.
While those running the full marathon will need to board the bus by 6:45 AM (for the 8:00 AM race start), those running the half marathon will leave for the race start at 9:15 AM, for the half’s 10:00 AM race start.
