Several hundred runners and walkers cross the finish line in both races combined each year at the Woodbury Chamber Country Mile Half Marathon & 5K, which takes participants on a tour of this small community situated just to the east of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
The town, which of course also is named Woodbury, welcomes about 25,000 attendees each year for this late-summer, weekend-long series of parades, live music and entertainment, with an auto show, carnival rides, a volleyball tournament and more.
The race’s name — the Woodbury Country Mile — doesn’t quite capture the distance runners travel along the way, as participants may choose from the half-marathon as well as a 5K Run/Walk.
Runners start the race at the athletic stadium at Woodbury’s East Ridge High School, and from there head west and north along the trails that parallel the highways in and around the residential neighborhoods in the southeastern part of the city.
With paved surfaces throughout the route, this out-and-back loop course features a combination of hilly terrain and flat stretches, and takes runners along a mixture of major highways and through wooded park paths and trails, as well as along the banks of two of the town’s lakes — Colby Lake and Powers Lake.
Runners must finish their race in time for the grand parade, which usually takes place at 1:00 PM along Steepleview Road and Queens Drive, and ends on Courtly Road near Victoria.
Race Weather & Climate
Located just south of Fish Hook Lake in central northern Minnesota, about 195 miles northwest of Minneapolis and roughly 85 miles east of Fargo, N.D., Park Rapids typically sees August temperatures that average between 78°F and 54°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.5 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (Aug. 21), the average low is 59°F and the average high is 80°F.
