Along this onetime railroad that ferried train passengers in days long past along the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in southwestern Pennsylvania, the Yough River Trail Council Half Marathon now unfolds along the 43-mile trail of the same name, now a multi-purpose recreational trail for biking, running, walking, fishing and canoeing.

Part of a planned larger recreational trail called the Great Allegheny Passage, the Yough River Trail usually welcomes a few hundred runners and walkers each year.

Though it is a smaller, more intimate running event, the race stands out for its abundant rural, open-spaces scenery along a mixed-surface course made up of both paved and gravel trails, which runs in parallel to the Youghiogheny River.

The out-and-back course includes a few rolling hills but no steep uphills or downhills, though it does take runners across a few wooden bridges along some brief parts of the trail.

In addition to the half marathon, the race also offers a 10-mile, 10K and 5K distance.

Race Climate & Weather

Though early April typically brings mild to cool weather to this small town (population 9,146) in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, the early mornings are typically cool and occasionally cold.

  • April 8 average low temp: 45ºF
  • April 8 average high temp: 61ºF
