Details
More than 400 runners flocked to the New York area for the 2007 (and
18th annual) running of the George Wodicka Hook Mountain Half Marathon
& 5K, which takes runners on a scenic, hilly course through
Rockland Lake State Park in Congers, N.Y., about 40 miles north of New
York City. Named for
George Wodicka, a local running
enthusiast and
active member of the local Rockland Road Runners running group who lost
his battle with cancer in 1996, the half-marathon is a tribute to what
race organizers remember as his sage advice on running, and his
knowledge of how to guide runners -- whether experienced or novice --
to success.
Described by the event organizers as "very challenging and scenic," the
half marathon course begins at the South Parking area of the park, and
takes runners around Rockland Lake for the first few miles of the race
before beginning the turn eastward toward the race's second half, which
unfolds along the banks of the Hudson River. The race is made up of
both paved roads and trails, and the second 6.5 miles of the race are
its most challenging, taking runners down Hook Mountain to the trail
along the river to the turnaround point, from which runners must return
back up the trail toward the finish back at Rockland Lake.
The 5K portion of the race, by contrast, is open to runners and walkers
and is largely fast and flat, and takes runners along a course around
the lake. The half-marathon begins at 8:30 AM, and the 5K begins at
9:00 AM.
