7 Bridge Crossing Half Marathons

I was thinking that quoting lines from Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” would be the way to go to introduce this list.

That is until my wife reminded me that lines like “When you’re down and out/when you’re on the street…” and others, like “When pain is all around…” perhaps weren’t the most inspiring lyrics to include.

That’s why I ended up going with something a little more lively — James Brown’s “Sex Machine,” which includes this line I couldn’t resist: “You got to have the feeling sure as you’re born/Get it together, right on, right on.”

It’s one of those songs you have to have in your playlist — you can’t help but get some more energy in your step the moment you hear the opening guitar riff, a pep I hope you’ll feel also when you run one of these stunning beautiful courses with bridge crossings below.

1) Golden Gate Half Marathon • San Francisco, CA

You’ll take in views of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge from the starting line at this race, which never disappoints. You’ll cross over the bridge from miles 6 through 9, and be ready for hills — you’ll climb over 1,000 feet over the course of the race.

2) Key Largo Bridge Run Half Marathon • Key Largo, FL

Flat and fast, this out-and-back race is full of spectacular views of Florida Bay and Barnes Sound. With only one big challenging bridge, it’s a great course for setting a new PR — and the four-hour time limit means walkers and slower runners are also welcome.

You should include Iron Girl Clearwater, which covers the Clearwater Memorial Bridge and Sand Key bridge. Runners have to traverse them twice, both on the out and the back portion of the race. Same goes for the Clearwater Distance Classic, which runs the same course (half marathon and full).

Run in two countries in one day, if you do the International half. There is also a US only half.

Terrell Johnson missed our bridge race in his article. The Walkway Over the Hudson is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world!
The Walkway Marathon/half marathon and 5K is Sunday, June 12, 2016. The bridge is 212 ft above the Hudson River and 1.28 miles long. The race is mostly off roads featuring 2 rail trail systems (Dutchess Rail Trail and Hudson Valley Rail Trail) and the Walkway. It is a race not to miss! Come join us.

We have a 1/2 in Milwaukee, WI that traverses high over the confluence of the Milwaukee and Menomonee rivers on the west and Lake Michigan to the east. The view is from the interstate highway that spans the Summerfest grounds the largest music festival in the world. Much of the run is along Milwaukee’s undeveloped parkland along the Lake Michigan shore. And when you sign up for the run you get a free admission to Summerfest.
