Designed as an event especially for women of all ages — organizers tell entrants to bring their daughters, moms, sisters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers and friends — Bend’s Happy Girls Run Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Run makes its 15th annual running this year.
Featuring an out-and-back course that starts in Bend’s Riverbend Park, which was completed in 2009 and features public access to the Deschutes River as well as access to the Deschutes River Trail, the 10-ft.-wide running, walking and jogging trail (with both pavers and soft running surfaces) that runners will head out on when they leave the starting line for the race.
Once runners head out onto the trails leaving the park, they first head south along the Deschutes River for the first mile and a half before crossing the river and heading north along the other side of the river.
The Deschutes River Trail leads runners for much of the first five miles and passing Farewell Bend and Miller’s Landing Parks along the way. After a turnaround near mile 8, runners retrace their steps before crossing the river near mile 11 and continuing south along the west side of the river until reaching the finish line at Riverbend Park.
The course features a combination of neighborhoods and riverside trails over the course of the race, and organizers add that the terrain on the course is made up of a combination of paved surfaces and groomed trails. Both walkers and runners are welcome to take part in the half marathon.
The race also features a number of events at the expo and on race day designed to inspire and empower, including what organizers are calling “Women’s Inspiration” stations on which participants can write why they’re taking on the challenge of running a half marathon — or as encouragement to friends, spouses or family members who are running.
