Set for its fourth annual running along a course that organizers say “will carry runners past more trees than buildings” out here in the fresh country air, the Avocado Half Marathon unfolds along an out-and-back route in Murrieta, which lies just north of Temecula and roughly an hour’s drive from San Diego.
Runners start the Avocado Half Marathon route next to Town Square Park and Murrieta Elementary School, along Juniper Street.
From there, the race heads southwest along Juniper and then northwest along Washington Avenue, heading past Murrieta Valley High School and into the residential neighborhoods just to the northwest, where you’ll hit some of the hilliest portions of the race.
From its lowest point (at the starting line) of about 1,100 feet above sea level, the race climbs roughly 240 feet by the time you reach the 4th mile marker, and that’s followed by another steep hill between miles 6 and 7. After runners make their way past miles 8 and 9, it’s mostly flat terrain all the way into the finish line.
Once they’ve made the last turnaround from Washington onto Juniper, runners then head back all the way back to the race finish at Town Square Park, where there will be “plenty of avocados” waiting at the finish line, organizers add.
The course time limit for the half marathon is 3 hours, 30 minutes.
