One of a series of races organized by Milwaukee’s Badgerland Striders running club, which counts more than 1,400 local residents and families among its members and whose history as a group for running and fitness enthusiasts dates back to the late 1950s, the Strider Half Marathon takes place the weekend before Labor Day weekend in late August each year.
After previous years of running in Milwaukee’s South Shore Park along its Lake Michigan waterfront, the Strider Half Marathon returned two years ago to Estabrook Park, which lies just north of downtown along the banks of the Milwaukee River.
From there — the scheduled starting time for the race is 8:00 AM — runners head out on a course that takes them onto the shaded Oak Leaf Trail for much of the course, along portions of this biking, running and walking trail that stretches more than 100 miles through the city.
Runners start off the race by making a loop around Estabrook Park and then head onto the Oak Leaf Trail, along which they’ll run an out-and-back stretch before heading back to the park for the race finish. Most of the course for the race is paved pathways, organizers note.
Just over 850 runners crossed the finish line at the 2016 race, and registration will be available on the day of the race if the cap of 1,000 entrants has not yet been reached.
Race Weather & Climate
Located along the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin’s southeastern corner, just over 90 miles north of Chicago, Milwaukee typically experiences moderately warm to sometimes quite hot weather conditions in the late summer.
On race day (Aug. 26), the average low is 60ºF and the average high is 77ºF.
