Run on what the race organizers describe as a “surprisingly fast” course along the shoreline of Lake George in the southern Adirondack Mountains of New York, the Camp Chingachgook Challenge race features both a 13.1-mile and a 10K race which finish back at the YMCA camp from which the race takes its name, in nearby Pilot Knob.

The race unfolds along the shoreline of one of New York’s historic summer resort communities, framed by the famous homes that make up “Millionaire’s Row” on the western side of the lake as well as the camps and resorts all along the shoreline.

Runners start the race at Lake George Elementary School near Lake George Beach State Park, and from there make a loop around the park as they head toward the lakefront to get to Beach Road.

Once they make it to Beach Road, runners turn right and head east for a stretch before turning left onto Front Street.

That’s followed by another turn onto Lake Street and then a turn onto East Shore Drive, which begins a long northward run along the eastern shoreline of the lake, taking runners past lake homes, the Dunham Bay Marsh, and several inlets and bays along the lakeshore.

The steepest and biggest hill of the race occurs in this stretch, as runners make their way around Dunham Bay around the mid-way point of the race.

After that, the hills largely subside for the next few miles, and don’t rear their head again until about the mile 10 marker, as runners are making their way past Fischers Marina. Then it’s just a few more miles past Van Warmer Bay, up to the YMCA Camp Chingachgook for the race finish line.
