Set for its 45th annual running here among the city streets of this historic Vermont city that’s surrounded by green hills, mountains and creeks along the roadways, the Crowley Brothers Road Race 10K added the half marathon distance for the first time in 2011.
According to the race organizers, the race actually got its start as far back as the late 1920s, when local runner Frank Crowley (who would later go on to represent the United States in long distance running at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles) competed against legendary Boston Marathon winner Clarence DeMar in what was then known as the Proctor Road Race, which was held in the nearby Proctor, which lies just a short drive from Rutland.
Crowley unexpectedly bested DeMar at the race, boosting his own profile in the running world as well as the profile of the race, which continued for a number of years but was then abandoned.
It wasn’t until decades later, in 1976, that the race was reborn by a group of local runners that included Frank Crowley’s brother Joe. Today, the race bears their name as a tribute to the contributions both have made to the New England running community.
On the day of the race, runners in the half marathon will start their race at a separate starting line from the 10K and 5K races — the half marathon will start on the campus of the College of St. Joseph, just off Dorr Drive.
From there, runners will follow what is roughly a clockwise loop route, northward from Rutland all the way to Proctor and back, finishing about a mile from the starting line along Merchants Row in downtown Rutland.
Along the way, runners will get a chance to soak in much of the scenery for which this part of Vermont is so well known, from the peaks of the Green Mountains off in the distance to the wide, green pastures and farm fields the course passes on the route northward along Proctor Road, and southward along Route 3.
These long, mostly straightaway stretches offer mostly gently rolling hills along country roads dotted with river crossings as well as long, meandering stretches along creeks and rivers, and plenty of the historic architecture for which Rutland is known.
