Part of a series of half marathon races known as the New England Half Marathon Tour, which takes place across 6 states in the Northeast, the Fall River Half Marathon is set to make its 5th annual running through the streets of this southern Massachusetts city.

The course for the race is set to unfold through the area known as the North End of Fall River, home to nearly 89,000 people here along the shoreline of Mount Hope Bay and the Taunton River.

Settled way back in 1670, Fall River was once a leading textile manufacturing center and famous for its granite quarries — as well as being the home of celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and Lizzie Borden, whose acquittal in the murder of her father and stepmother remains the subject of intense speculation even today.

Runners are set to start the race near the Fall River Municipal Airport, on Airport Road near the offices of Viveiros Insurance. From there, runners will head northeast along Airport Road and turn right on Commerce Way, heading around the factory near the fire station there.

The first couple of miles are a long out-and-back past the airport on Commerce Drive to the turnabout, and then back toward the factory that runners just passed in the first mile.

The next several miles unfold along Airport Road, Riggenbach Road, Wilson Road and Meridian Street, taking runners south all the way down the western shore of Watuppa Pond. They’ll hit the next turnaround near the intersection of Meridian and Hannah Street, and then head back north along Meridian, retracing their steps all the way back to Riggenbach Road.

They’ll follow Riggenbach Road north all the way until it turns into Innovation Way, which is the signal that the race has nearly reached the third turnaround point, around the mile 10 marker. After that, runners turn around and head back south along Riggenbach, to the right turn onto Airport Road and the curve north all the way back to Viveiros Insurance for the race finish.

The organizers of the race describe the course as “moderately challenging,” with most of it taking runners through the Fall River industrial park and along Meridian Street, with the roughly mile-long out-and-back near the airport.

Race Weather & Climate
