Ready to run a half-marathon by the light of the full moon? You’ll get a chance to do it at the Sheboygan County Full Moon Race Half Marathon, which takes runners on a west-to-east point-to-point course between the Wisconsin towns of Plymouth and Kohler that’s mostly flat and follows a gradual downhill from start to finish.

The course takes runners along Sheboygan County’s Old Plank Road Trail, a 17-mile trail which features a combination of paved and turf surfaces and is popular with locals for hiking, walking, running, biking, horseback riding and inline skating.

The 8-ft.-wide paved trail has an asphalt surface for most of the race, and runners will also run some roadways away from the trail near the beginning and the end of the half marathon.

From the starting line at the Quit Qui Oc Sports Complex on Riverview Road in Plymouth, the race course follows a roughly west-to-east route, taking runners first south along the road just outside the athletic complex and then onto the Old Plank Road Trail, which runs parallel to Highway 23.

Runners follow the trail from Plymouth all the way in to Kohler, turning right off the trail once they reach the city and begin the stretch that takes them to the finish line at the Kohler School.

The race typically sees a few hundred runners cross the finish line each year, and runners will start the race in Plymouth at 6:00 PM, just as the sun is setting and timed to coincide with the full moon. All runners are expected to complete the race within 3 hours from the start.

Race Weather & Climate

Located about 50 miles north of Milwaukee and roughly 140 miles north of Chicago, Ill., Plymouth typically sees August temperatures between 79°F and 59°F, while rainfall averages just over 4 inches, making August the city’s wettest month of the year.

On the day of the race (Aug. 12), the average low is 60ºF and the average high is 80ºF.
