The race got its start years ago as a post-Thanksgiving running outing among a group of local residents who wanted to get in a run and work off some holiday pounds. As the group of runners coming out for the race grew over the years, the organizers decided to make it an official race in 1995.
In 2006, the race course was changed to Overland Park’s Corporate Woods area, adding some city streets and neighborhood areas to what had been an entirely off-road race in the past (it had been run along the city’s Indian Creek Bike Trail).
This race has experienced some problems in the past, including what some participants have described as inadequate trail markings and insufficient restroom facilities at the starting and finish lines. Other runners, however, have given the race rave reviews, especially for the course’s scenic beauty and its relative lack of significant hills along the course, making for an easy (on the joints) and enjoyable race.
Half Marathon Guide is the largest calendar and educational resource in the world for half marathon runners and enthusiasts with over 10,000,000 annual visitors.
