Set for its fourth annual running this fall along the trails and forest roads near the South Rim of the majestic Grand Canyon, the Grand Canyon Half Marathon expect to draw as many as 1,500 runners out to one of the world’s true natural wonders, which stretches more than 270 miles long and up to 18 miles wide, and reaches a depth of more than a mile at its deepest point.
Runners thinking of taking part in the race should note that the race never takes them inside Grand Canyon National Park — the course winds through nearby Tusayan, a small resort town here in northern Arizona that’s grown up around Grand Canyon Village.
From the starting line there, the race follows a counter-clockwise loop around the trails — including the Grand Canyon Village Greenway — and forest roads that run through the Kaibab National Forest, which stretches across more than 1.6 million acres north and south of the Grand Canyon, and features everything from grasslands to forests, as well as some 300 miles of trails.
The course winds through the forest along gradual uphills and downhills, but there isn’t significant elevation change throughout the race — at its highest point, the race brings runners to just over 6,700 feet; at its lowest, the race drops to about 6,445 feet.
Still, you’ll need to be ready for a (very) high-elevation run, as you’ll be running at far above the elevation of most American cities when you trek the 13.1 miles through the Kaibab roads and trails at this race.
