Wisconsin’s Big Green Lake — whose more than 7,300 acres and nearly 30 miles of shoreline here in the state’s southeastern corner have made the area a perennially popular vacation getaway for fishing, boating, golf and a range of outdoor recreation activities — is the setting for the 11th annual Green Lake Area Half Marathon, 10K & 5K.

Runners can expect lots of views of the lake during the race, as nearly all of the first mile and the middle stretch of the race (along miles 4, 5 and 6) take runners near the lake’s shoreline, as well as the race finish on South Street, just a stone’s throw from Dartford Bay looking out into the lake.

And it’s the lake that makes this area such a big attraction for vacationers from Wisconsin and nearby Illinois, especially for its ample opportunities for boating and fishing (including northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye, channel catfish, lake trout and others).

Downtown start. From the starting line in downtown Green Lake, near the intersection of Mill and Water Streets, runners take off from the starting line and head south on Mill — and pass a small waterfall — for a few blocks before making an immediate right onto South Street, and then another quick turn (this time left) onto Lawson Drive. Runners remain on Lawson for just over the next mile or two, including turns onto Irving Park Road and Ledgeview Road, followed by about a quarter-mile stretch along a mowed pathway before turning again onto Stone House Road. By the time runners reach the mile 3 marker along Stone House, the course will have been gradually ascending through the first three miles, rising about 150 feet between the start and the third mile marker. Golf courses, lakeshore and more. Next, the course then takes runners quickly downhill over the next mile as the route heads through the rolling hills and tree-lined fairways of a golf course and then makes its way closer to the lakeshore. The race route heads all the way south along Lawson down to the conference center near the edge of the lake, and then brings runners back around again toward the golf course for the return route back along several stretches of the course they’ve already run. Runners head all the way eastward back along the lake toward the final couple of miles of the race, which takes them along the western edge of the golf course at Tuscumbia Country Club before sending the runners back out onto South Street for the race finish.
